Sylgard 160 is a silicone elastomer that is room temperature or heat accelerate cure. This advanced material is suitable as a general potting material for a variety of power supplies including connectors, industrial controls, sensors and transformers. The material has a versatile rapid curing process controlled by temperature.
Sylgard 160 is a two-part, dark grey, general purpose potting material that has a UL 94V-0 flame rating providing excellent flame resistance and good flowability. It can be considered for a variety of uses requiring added flame resistance. Sylgard 160 is provided as a two-part liquid component, when mixed together thoroughly, the material becomes a flexible elastomer which is best suited for the protection of electronic applications. The pot life of the silicone elastomer is approximately 20 minutes at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. Cure times will vary depending on the temperature. At a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, the material will cure in approximately 24 hours. Heat curing at a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius will make the material cure in about 4 minutes. Sylgard 160 has a mix ratio of 1 to 1 allowing for some process and dispense equipment variation. De-airing is not required in most cases. This innovative material is capable of experiencing a temperature range of -45 to 200 degrees Celsius for prolonged periods.
Having a temperature higher or lower than what is recommended will alter the performance and behavior, making it more complex requiring additional consideration. It is extremely important to understand the application methods, processing, compatibility and handling precautions of Sylgard 160. There are certain chemicals, materials, plasticizers and curing agents that may hinder the curing process. Some of these material include Organotin, sulfur, polysulfides, unsaturated hydrocarbon plasticizers and some solder flux residues. It is recommended to run a small scale compatibility test to ensure this is the correct product for the substrates being used. Sylgard 160 can be applied using automated metered mixing and dispensing or manual mixing. Shelf life of this advanced material will be indicated on the label. The containers should be sealed with air space minimized. The exposure to moisture can cause bubbles to form and it can reduce adhesion.
