Loctite 609 is an acrylic, methacrylate ester, green liquid material designed for the bonding of cylindrical fitting parts. This advanced material has medium strength and will cure when it is confined with the absence of air. An activator is also available as a secondary cure if needed. Some typical applications of Loctite 609 retaining compound include locks bushings and sleeves on housing shafts. Rotor to shafts in sub-fractional and fractional horsepower motors. This product meets the requirements of military specification Mil-R-46082B.
The compound is one component requiring no mixing. It has low viscosity and is positive under UV lights. Once Loctite 609 Retaining Compound is cured between close fitting surfaces, it will assist in preventing loosening and leakage caused by shock and vibration. Specific gravity at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius will be 1.10. Cure speed will be dependent on the type of substrate used and temperature. This innovative product is resistant to a wide variety of chemicals including unleaded gasoline, motor oil, brake fluid, water glycol 50/50, acetone and ethanol.
To achieve the best results, clean all surfaces with a cleaning solvent, eliminating dirt, dust and debris. Product is not recommended to be used in oxygen rich systems or as a sealant for strong oxidizing materials. It is not normally suited to be used on plastics where stress cracking can result. If the substrate is an inactive metal or the curing process is taking too long, it is recommended to spray an activator. Parts should not be handled until handling strength is attained. To disassemble the cured retaining compound, apply localized heat of 250 degrees Celsius and disassemble while it is hot. Cleaning cured Loctite 609 can be done with soaking in a Loctite solvent and using a wire brush to scrub the excessive product.
It is important to understand the general use of this material to ensure safe handling. Loctite 609 Retaining Compound should be stored between the temperatures of 8 and 21 degrees Celsius. Anything above or below may affect the properties of the product. A dry location in its original tightly sealed container is recommended for the storage. Once taken out of its original container, the retaining compound should not be returned because there is a chance it has become contaminated. Shelf life will be stated on the label. More information on the safety and handling methods can be found using the Loctite 609 MSDS.
