Loctite 3979 Translucent Light Cure Acrylic Adhesive

Loctite 3979 is a single component, UV-visible light cure, acrylic adhesive designed for medical bonding applications. This advanced material fluoresces red under UV light and cures rapidly by being exposed to UV light or visible light of the appropriate wavelength. Loctite 3979 uncured appearance is translucent to hazy yellow gel free of undissolved solids. It has been qualified to Henkel’s ISO 10993 Protocol.

Henkel Loctite 3979 specific gravity at room temperature is 1.1 and on the refractive index 1.48 per ASTM D542. Viscosity, cone and plated at 25°C, mPa (Cp): Physical MC100, Cone MK22, cp50, 35,000 to 78,000, shear rate 2 s-1. Stress cracking, ASTM D 3929 13.8 N/mm² stress on bar 5 minutes. 17.2 N/mm² stress bar 4 minutes. Loctite 3979 is applied to a medical grade polycarbonate bar 10.2 cm by 2.6 cm by 3mm which is then flexed to induce a known stress level.

Loctite 3979 dielectric breakdown strength 24 kV/mm IEC 60243-1. Dielectric constant/dissipation factor at 1 kHz 4.63/0.04, 100 KHz 4.52/0.02, 1MHz 4.25/0.03. Henkel Loctite 3979 cured properties, linear shrinkage 2.0%, volume shrinkage 6.0%, elongation at break is 227%. The product does experience 5.8% water absorption when submerged under water for 2 hours at 100°C. Tensile strength is 2,620 psi and tensile modulus is 54,780 psi. It is important to read and fully understand the Henkel Loctite 3979 MSDS before handling. The product is light sensitive, any exposure to UV light, daylight, and artificial lighting should be kept to a minimum during handling and storage. Optimal temperature to store is between 8 to 21°C. Anything above or below the stated temperature can affect the materials properties. Cure rate will be dependent on the distance from the light source, light intensity, distance from the light, bondline gap and light transmittance of the substrate which radiation must pass through. Allowing bonds to cool before subjecting to any service loads is strongly recommended. Any excess adhesive can be wiped away using organic solvents.
