Silicone LED Assembly Materials
Compatibility of adhesives, sealants and encapsulants with LEDs has been a continuing issue for years. The problem encountered was trying to find a well-suited adhesive and sealant that wouldn’t degrade LED light quality and cause dome failure. Many adhesives and encapsulants will turn brown once they are exposed to the light-emitting diode blocking the light. Some of the most advanced silicone materials provided for LED assembly is manufactured by Dow Corning. Dow Corning LED lighting solutions provides durable silicones as a barrier against environmental contaminates and allows vibration absorption to sustain the electrical properties. Dow Corning has been specializing in silicone products for over 50 years. LED assembly has been one of their main focuses because there was a concern of inadequate encapsulants, adhesives and sealants in such a vast growing electronics industry. The materials needed to provide protection for LED lighting modules include thermal interface materials, conformal coatings, optical encapsulants, adhesives and sealants. Silicone is an advancement in the lighting industry providing critical needs while withstanding the harsh conditions. It has been utilized in high brightness LED packages for protection, light extraction and forming lenses for thermal management.
Dow Corning EG-6301 is a colorless, two component, silicone elastomer encapsulant that is used in LED application assemblies. The dielectric strength is 725 volts/mil or 29 kV/mm. It has an operational temperature range of -45 to 200 degrees Celsius. It is specifically formulated to meet the challenging demands of the LED market. The silicone material is capable of absorbing stresses caused by thermal cycling as well as protecting wires and the chip. Dow Corning EG-6301 will have a shelf life of 6 months if it is kept at a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. It is a specialized silicones that will not degrade the light quality or cause dome damage.
LED Assembly Materials
Henkel LED is the only Cree approved company that has LED compatible solutions for building lighting devices. Loctite adhesives and sealants for LED assembly are capable of providing a long life under exposure to harsh conditions including extreme heat, dirt, dust, underwater submersion and vibration. The products provided are used for threadlocking, general bonding, potting, lens bonding and sealing. Many of those advanced materials are used for a variety of applications including:

Loctite E-30CL is a popular industrial grade epoxy used in all 4 applications listed above. It is a low viscosity, two component material that is capable of staking, potting and laminating applications where optical clarity and electrical insulating properties are required. It will provide a tough bond to LED lighting components while meeting the stringent chemical testing protocol developed by Cree, Inc. Henkel Loctite provides a large variety of different urethanes, silicones, epoxies and polyurethanes to meet the demands of a variety of LED assembly applications.
