Huntsman’s Epocast 50-A1 Resin / Hardener 946 is designed for the manufacture and repair of composite structures. This unfilled and easy-to-handle material is solvent-free, and self-extinguishing. Epocast 50-A1 Resin / Hardener 946 can also be used for filament winding, and is qualified to the Boeing BMS 8-201, Type IV specification. If a longer work life is required, Epocast 50-A1 Resin / Hardener 9816 is also available. If additional information regarding application methods is required, please contact a certified Krayden Technical Representative.
On its own, this Epoxy Laminating Resin is amber in color, and the 946 hardener is a straw color. The final color for this system is amber. The density for the Epocast 50-A1 Resin is 1.21 g/cc, for the 946 hardener is 1.05 g/cc, and together their density is 1.18. The viscosity for the Epoxy Laminating Resin at 77°F (25°C) is 7,770 cP, and at this temperature, the viscosity for the 946 hardener is 400 cP. When used as a system, at 100 gms, the gel time for this material is 20 minutes at 77°F (25°C.) When unopened, the shelf life for Epocast 50-A1 Resin is 12 months stored at 77°F (25°C), and 12 months for the 946 hardener when stored unopened at 77°F (25°C).
To properly mix this Epoxy Laminating System, add 15 parts by weight of Hardener 946 to 100 parts by weight of Epocast 50-A1 resin. To make certain both components are combined thoroughly, mix together for several minutes. To avoid excessive exothermic reaction, mix only the quantity that is to be applied within several minutes of combining. The cure schedule for this Epoxy Laminating System is five days at 77°F (25°C) or two hours at 170-200ºF (77-93°C.) Cure schedule is to take place after this materials room temperature gel time.
When storing, Huntsman’s Epocast 50-A1 Resin and Hardener 946 should remain separate. Both components should be kept sealed in their original containers in a dry storage area. Storage temperature should stay between 60-100°F (16-38°C.) When mixing, temperatures should stay above 65°F (18°C.) Containers should be securely resealed after opening. After the date of shipment from Huntsman, Epocast 50-A1 Resin and Hardener 946 will be reusable for 12 months if stored under suggested conditions. Please Contact Krayden, an authorized distributor of Huntsman Corporation, for more information on product handling precautions or application methods.
