Molykote G-3407 Caliper Pin Grease is a polyalkylene glycol (PAG) based greased primarily formulated to reduce fretting corrosion problem and to control excessive pin wear of brake caliper guide and pins of automotive cars. Moreover with its greater service temperature range property, Dow Corning MolykoteG-3407Grease is capable of preventing high-temperature seizure.
A caliper pin fretting test was conducted on the three leading lubricating grease products, and each having different base component. The silicone grease with PTFE, silicone with molybdenum (MoS2) and Dow Corning Molykote G-3407 were applied to lubricate the brake caliper guide and pin.
The performance of each grease product was observed for 15 minutes (please see below graph). Both the two silicone-based grease products shot up to about 50 Newton even at the start of the test, while Dow Corning Molykote grease rose to 35 Newton after about a minute has lapsed.
After 5 minutes the two silicone–based greases were already in the vicinity of 70 to 80 Newton, while Molykote G-3407 grease declined to about 30 Newton. Surprisingly silicone-based grease with MoS2 rose to over 100 Newton in 6 minutes. At the end of the test silicone-based grease with PTFE increased to 90 Newton, and amazingly Molykote G-3407 maintained at about 30 Newton.
This result confirms that Dow Corning Molykote G-3407 can reduce the frictional heat to a minimum level, and fulfilling its guaranteed performance to trim down fretting corrosion and wear problem at high temperature.
