Dowsil 748 is a one component, non-slumping paste, general purpose silicone adhesive/sealant. This material can be used on corrosion-sensitive electronic equipment with no adverse effects and it also complies with the FDA Regulation CFR 177.2600 covering indirect contact with food. The silicone will react with moisture in the air to cure into a tough, rubbery solid. Relative humidity must be at least 20 percent to effectively cure the material. The main use for this adhesive/sealant is general-purpose bonding and sealing applications where non-corrosive and low odor properties.

Dowsil 748 Sealant has a skin-over time of approximately 15 minutes and a tack free time of 30 minutes. A full cure of 0.125 inch of material will take 7 days. Once the product is fully cured it will have an off-white appearance and the specific gravity at 25 degrees Celsius will be 1.33. Tensile strength of Dowsil 748 is 275 psi and elongation is 350 percent per ASTM D 412. This silicone is formulated for easy handling with no heating, mixing, or solvent hazards. It is easily repairable by cutting away old material and replacing it with new material.
When applying Dowsil 748, it is suggested that all surfaces are cleaned thoroughly. The material form a bond to most clean surfaces of glass, silicone, metals, organic resins and vulcanized silicone rubber. The best adhesion is obtained with a 15 mil thick glue line. Bonding to certain plastics will require a primmer to ensure a strong bond. Dow 738 Sealant complies with noncorrosive requirements of MIL-A-46146 allowing it to be supplied to this portion of the specification if required. The service temperature is 105 degrees Celsius and it meets a UL 94 Flame Class, 94 HB. UL File No. E 40195 (N).

As with any new silicone material, it is strongly recommended to read the MSDS and understand the safety precautions that need to be taken before handling. Dow 748 Sealant will have a shelf life of 24 months from date of manufacture when it is stored at or below 32 degree Celsius. The containers must be tightly sealed when not in use because this material reacts with moisture in the air. Cured material may plug up the tip of the nozzle but it can be removed easily and it will not affect the rest of the material.
