Dow Corning 3-6548 is a room temperature cure, fire resistant, two component, medium density, silicone RTV foam. This advanced material is offered as A and B liquid components. Part A is black and Part B is an off white liquid. The variation of colors allows easy identification and inspection of mix. The product has excellent fire endurance per ASTM E 814 allowing it to be well suited for preparing fire-resistant penetration seals. The silicone foam is well suited for applications in construction and the aerospace industry.
Dow Corning 3-6548 Silicone RTV Foam has a ratio of 1:1 by either weight or volume. Mix together vigorously for 30 to 60 seconds by hand or with a power mixer to ensure both parts are fully mixed together. The material will expand and cure to a foamed elastomer at room temperature. Being in a room that is well-ventilated is important during cure because it will generate hydrogen gas during cure. It has a specific gravity between 1.05 and 1.11 at 25 degrees Celsius. Dow Corning 3-6548 will have a working time of one to two minutes at room temperature. Working time will vary depending on the temperature of part A and B just before and after mixing.
The silicone foam will expand from two to four times its liquid volume during cure. It is strongly recommended to not lay the liquid in layers thicker than one inch in any spot. After Dow Corning 3-6548 is installed, damming materials need to sit for at least 24 hours to allow the penetration seal to cure fully. Maximum adhesion is obtained when foaming against a freshly exposed foam surface free of dirt, dust, moisture and other components. This product has not been tested or deemed suitable for pharmaceutical or medical uses. Once cured the foam can be cleaned, removed, changed as well as repaired as needed.
It is strongly suggested to read and understand the Dow Corning 3-6548 MSDS. When Part A and B are stored in their tightly sealed original containers at or below 32 degrees Celsius, the foam will have a shelf life of 12 months from the date of shipment. Expiration date will be clearly stated on the products packaging. Excess cured foam around the penetration seal can be removed with a sharp knife or blade. Most coatings and paints will not adhere to this material, contact a Krayden representative and they will assist you with any questions that you may have.
