Krayden, Chemetall and a leading Canadian MRO customer had a challenge – How to speed up the super slow cycle time of stripping paint on an aircraft. The current “local” product was painfully slow, so our customer reached out to us and we suggested the Chemetall 3000-W material, which was literally twice as fast. Although the product was a bit more expensive, the 2X speed cut man hours in half.
|What is the application?||To strip the entire Beaver class aircraft which requires a fast acting paint stripper to get this project done.|
|What issues was the end user having?||Lowe cycle time. Tested local industrial products which took hours/days to react and dissolve paint.|
|What material was used to solve the issue?||ARDROX 3000-W|
|Why was the material chosen for the application?
||Originally looked at Ardrox 2607 which had been discontinued and replaced with 3000-W. Alkaline-based was okay in their process which gave us the option to go for a strong acting material.|
|Why did this material work better than other materials?||Based on TDS this was in my mind the best available choice.|
|Did the material improve the process?||Yes and no.|
|If So, how?||Yes, by reducing total man-hours required to strip each aircraft. There was a challenge in the fact that this material was alkaline based and would eat away at a normal pail pump system. The specialized alkaline resistant pump had to be ordered in.|
|What industry/market was this material used in?||Aerospace MRO|
|Was this material lower cost than other materials?||No, this material was per drum $700 CAD higher than the next best option. However, based on the fact it worked twice as fast it gave us a serious value proposition.|
|Savings to end user in the cost of material or process improvement? Time, $ or both?||Significant improvement in man-hours saved. HIgher cost but saving more in the long run. Process mostly unchanged.|
