The story:
Krayden partnered with a company having issues with attaching a ceramic to an aluminum heat sink in a LiDar unit. We solved the challenge by using DOWSIL TC-2035 which offered excellent bonding and flexibility.
What is the application? | Attaching a ceramic to an aluminum heat sink in a LiDar unit. |
What issues was the end-user having? | Ceramic used for the array in the lidar unit was cracking when the unit was heated and cooled. Unlike other heat sink applications, this ceramic and heat sink were curved, so there was thermal expansion occurring in an extra direction, when compared to a flat ceramic on a flat heat sink surface. The added complexity was causing the cracking in the ceramic. |
What material was used to solve the issue? | DOWSIL TC-2035. |
Why did this material work better than other materials? | Other adhesives were too stiff, causing the ceramic to crack when the LiDar unit heated and cooled. Flexibility of this material allowed for the ceramic and aluminum to expand and contract at their different CTE rates under heating and cooling without breaking the ceramic. |
Was this material lower cost than other materials? | No, but nothing else had worked until they tested DOWSIL TC-2035. |
Did this material improve the process? | Yes, the material gave them the adhesion they were looking for, so that they did not need to use mechanical fastening, while still providing the heat transfer required of the interface, without breaking the ceramic. |
What industry/market was this material used in? | EV/LiDar |
