Araldite 2042 is a two part, rapid curing, high strength polyurethane adhesive designed for bonding plastics including ABS, polycarbonate, and nylon with minimal substrate preparation. This advanced material is also known to bond materials with differing CTEs like nylon to stainless steel. Once cured, it offers excellent environmental stability and impact resistance. The resin is a white viscous liquid and the hardener is a red liquid. Viscosity of the resin is 50,000 cP at room temperature and the viscosity of the hardener is 20,000 cP. Araldite 2042 A/B will have a mixed viscosity of 50,000 cP at 25 degrees Celsius. Mix ratio is 100 of resin to 100 of the hardener by volume. Pot life will be 3 minutes for a 4 fl oz mass of material at 25 degrees Celsius. A minimum cure time of 6 hours at 25 degrees Celsius is required or it can be heat cured at 100 degrees Celsius and the cure time will be approximately 10 minutes. It will take 60 minutes to cure at 60 degrees Celsius. Huntsman Araldite 2042 is applied with a spatula to the preheated dry joint. Thicknesses of 0.002 to 0.004 inches will give the greatest lap shear strength to the joint. The two components need to be assembled and clamped together as soon as the adhesive has been applied. Even contact between the substrates will ensure proper cure. This material is best used to bond polycarbonate, ABS, Nylon, Vulcanized rubber and primed metals.
