Fit to bond an assortment of plastic and metal substrates, Araldite 2028 is a two component polyurethane adhesive consisting of a transparent hardener and a transparent resin. Water clear and fast curing, this structural adhesive’s flashpoint is above 100°C and it remains UV stable. The polyurethane cures at room temperature and allows the adhesive to produce resilient bonds on thermoset composites, glass substrates, metals, and thermoplastics. Araldite 2028 is flexible and offers a convenient one-to-one mix ratio by volume or weight. With tools recommended by Huntsman Advanced Materials, this product can be applied as a ready-to-use adhesive and is sold in cartridges that incorporate mixers.
The specific gravity of Araldite 2028 High-Strength Clear Adhesive is 1.12 for the resin as well as the hardener. The specific gravity remains 1.12 when the components are mixed. The resin’s viscosity is 10.4 at 25°C (Pas) and the hardener’s viscosity is 1.2 at 25°C (Pas.) The pot life for Araldite 2028 High-Strength Clear Adhesive is 6 minutes after mixing. To mix properly, 100 parts by weight/ volume of Araldite 2028 High-Strength Clear Adhesive resin should be added to 100 parts by weight/ volume of hardener. If more technical information for this product is desired, please see the Huntsman Araldite 2028 Technical Data Sheet.
Before utilizing Araldite 2028 Polyurethane Structural Adhesive, it is important to sufficiently prepare the surfaces to be bonded. The durability and strength of the bonded joint are dependent upon on clean surfaces that have been treated with a good degreasing agent. Any trace of dirt, oil, and grease should be removed using isopropanol (for plastics), acetone, or other certified degreasing agents. Pretreatment methods including chemically etching or mechanically abrading will ensure the toughest most durable joints. Mechanically abrading a surface should be followed up by an additional degreasing treatment before bonding.
Once Araldite 2028 has been applied, all tools used in the process should be cleaned with hot soapy water before residue left over from the adhesive has time to cure. Removing cured adhesive residue is time-consuming and can prove difficult. When separate components are kept in tightly sealed containers at temperatures between 15-25°C, Araldite 2028 can be stored up to 15 months.
